Alright time to explain the aka, but first to explain the origins of chili.  Chili is a spicy stew-type dish that was created by Texans to fool non-Texans with weak stomachs.  Chili sounds like the word ‘chilly’, which means cold; but ‘chili’ is in fact hot. It’s spicy and it’s served hot, so I guess it’s double hot.  And with that, chili was enjoyed by all.  And that’s the story of the first chili cookoff.

[It’s not pretty.  Actually, it looks like a steaming bowl of trouble, but it’s the beginning of a spicy, sweaty, terrifying adventure.  Awesome.]

If you read any of that previous sentence, forget reading it.  I wrote it after I had a bowl of the Gunslinger Chili and my body’s still feeling a bit warm from it.  Chili My Soul’s got over 30 types of chili and they all have their own flavor and their own heat rating. The gungslinger was an 8, and you feel the spice in your mouth and you feel it in your gut.  It’s not an overpowering spice, but you definitely know that you’re eating something magical.  It kinda feels like you’re eating something that you know’s not good for you, but you keep doing it anyway.

[The sign doesn’t lie.  They have 30+ chilis and they have about 15 of them at any given day.  And freaking free samples…try the Diablo.]

As far as taste goes…it’s okay.  It’s not gourmet, it’s not necessarily healthy or smart food.  It’s chili, but it’s some damn good chili.  If I only rated chili restaurants, I’d have to give this place a 4.5 for its variety and commitment to chili, but to be honest, it’s not always a good time for chili.

[My friend Peter enjoying his chili a bit too much…weird.]

To end, I give you my chili-to-life analogies.

  1. Chili is a lot like a good marriage; it takes the right combination of ingredients and time and work to make it right.
  2. Chili is a lot like a well-working football team; it takes the right combination of ingredients and time and work to make it right.
  3. Chili is a lot like performing surgery; it takes knives and spices in the right combination to make it right.
  4. Chili is a lot like a good tennis shoe; made of meat and spices.
  5. Chili is a lot like rock and roll; it uses powered amps.
  6. Chili…I need to lie down…chili…damn chili.
